Grocery or hardware stores carry TSP (Tri Sodium Phosphate) Make a weak solution per instructions and soak the head in it o'nite.
Soak the shower head in plain household vinegar.
try using salt as an abrasive. if salt can clean the bottom of an iron, it can clean that.
