Finding maggots in drawers...how can I get rid of these pests?
Question:I have a dresser in my room, it's under 20 years old. Recently I've been finding maggots inside of it. Now, I don't store food in there. It's pretty much all clothes aside from one drawer I keep assorted guitar equipment (extra strings, winders, wires, picks, etc) in. I don't even know what kind of bugs these are growing into, but from what I understand, maggots or larvae are usually attracted to decaying matter. For the most part, my bedroom isn't messy (I'm not a clean freak by any stretch, but my room isn't a horror story...sock here, sock there, you know). So I don't know what's attracting these creepy disgusting little creatures. This happened once before...I took out all the drawers, cleaned off the maggots, sprayed the inside of the drawers and the inside of the dresser itself with RAID. Well, they're back again and the thought of these disgusting things creeping all about my clothes and such IRKS me. How can I get rid of 'em and stop them from coming back?
Answers:
your dresser may be infected with termites. check it thoroughly and determine if the wood is still good. if you see small holes, tracks, etc it's either termites or wood worms. the larvae state is the first stage of growth once hatched from eggs layed by the female adult. if infected, place it ouside by the curb for the trash truck to haul off. they will spread, quickly, if not dealt with immediatly.
while there are treatments for termites, it may be more expensive than the dresser is worth. the same is true for wood worms.
