Strange Smell in Shelves?

Question:I just moved into a house built in 1958 which still has the original storage shelves throughout the home. These shelves are closed by a door, but there is this seriously bizarre smell that comes from the door whenever it is opened. Not all the shelves have this smell, but the ones around the bathroom for sure do. It's kind of like a mildew/chemical smell. Very unappetizing. Any idea how to get this smell out? Even when the doors are closed, I can still get a whiff of it when I walk by sometimes.

Do Away With Nasty, Cupboard Odors
The first method you should try to remove odor from your cupboards is to place a box of baking soda inside each cabinet. Baking soda will take care of most odor problems. However, if the baking soda does not alleviate the problem, take everything out of your cabinets and wipe down the inside of your cupboards with a heavy mixture of white vinegar and water.

The vinegar odor will be strong when you are applying it, but when it is dry it will not be noticeable
Good Luck!=)

Check for leaks first. It sounds like you have water coming from somewhere. Look at the walls adjoining the bathroom for water stains. Look around the sink, toilet, tub or shower on the floor for wet or warpage. Look at the baseboards in the bathroom to see if they are uneven, the same for the walls. Water has a mysterious way of finding it's own route through the studs. Thankfully, it is in a closet so you may have to open the wall up to see whether the mold is growing behind the drywall.

A little test you can do before making a hole in the wall is to get a tub of DampRid Moisture Crystals. Leave it in the closet and check it every couple of days to see whether water is accumulating. If it is, you have a leak somewhere.

To eliminate the odor, baking soda, activated charcoal or a dish of vinegar will all do the trick. But, if there is a leak as the source of the smell, it will continue to smell unpleasant.
stick baking soda in a bowl on one of the shelves...or coffee grinds..both absorb odors
it is fact that water can transfer within the walls.so it mixes with concreet and gives u a chemical smell.thats it n confusin
