How can I remove the odour from rubber ice-cube trays?

Question:Hi, I have had two soft rubber ikea ice cube trays for about 7 years now. They don't make them from the same 'easy to use and remove cubes' material anymore so I am keen to overhaul them if possible. They are in excellent condition but both have acquired a slightly unpleasant and vaguely spicey mineral (I assume) smell from years in the 0 frosting freezer.

I have tried scrubbing them with detergents and separately bleaching them and soaking them in hot water but to no avail. I am guessing this rubber has this smell throughout, but since it isn't showing any signs of fatigue, I wonder if this smell cant be ousted or made more pleasant so it doesn't affect the taste of the ice.

Can anyone help with this - I know I probably sound daft, but these trays are a joy to use and I bet there is a sanitation wizard out there with the answer...

Cheers, Jim

Answers:
I would try both the vinegar and baking soda together let soak over night and see what happens. I use apple cider vinegar all the time when cleaning it is a bit stronger than the white vinegar.

wash in hot water or just get new ones
Dissolve a lot of baking soda in boiling water, pour it into the trays, cover with hot water and let stand over night or so.
try baking soda in hot water and let them soak
Well you could try wiping them down with vinegar. My great grandma always did that with smelly things so I just figure that's what its for.
I mean it cant hurt to try right?!
Good luck.
