I left my BBQ grill sitting out all winter. What's the best way to get rust off a cast iron grill surface?
Question:I've tried steel wool & vinegar, but it's backbreaking work and I'm not convinced I'm doing a thorough job.
Answers:
Let it sit in Coca-Cola a few hours then scrub with steel wool, Then rub the surface down with oil and fire the grill up for a couple of hours on low heat.
Use Mr.clean Sponges they take off anything and clean anything they are the most awesome product I have found. You get 2 of them in a box for a little over 2.00 I get mine at wal-mart.Don't get the off Brand because they don't work.
u can use CLR but unless its an expensive grill its eaiser to get a new one
buy some hydrochloric acid at lowes. it might do the trick. it usually doesnt eat up iron, just aluminum. :D but be careful when you handle it of course. its almost in the 50% range of acidity... and hydrochloric acid is STRONG stuff. it hurts when you smell it too. and, if your outside on a wet day, the vapors make smoke with the humidity. fun stuff lol. but just remember if you dilute it, add water to acid, not acid to water! adding water to acid may cause boiling and splattering. bad stuff. and i found a little trick. if you get some one your skin just have some soda water by your side... which is a lot of baking soda in water. it neutralizes the acid which hinders and stops burns.

When I clean my cast iron skillet a little too well, it gets rusty.
When I clean it I just wash it well and place it on the burner and let it heat up. I let it cool and use a potholder to pick it up to return it to storage. I clean my BBQ grill in a similiar way. I just brush off the bugs or dust on it and then let the fire just burn the rust off. If you have lots of fat drippings remove them from the grill before you start. Be careful because what is in with the coals will also burn. It may smell until it is cooked. That is my easy way to do it...
I was told that if you soak anything in cokeacola it well eat right through it.
