Do you think cheap laundry detergent works as well as the expensive stuff?
Question:I only buy laundry detergent when it is on sale. I am that way about groceries too. I bought 4 jugs of Purex for $2.10 and thought maybe the reason its so cheap is because it doesnt clean the oil and dirt out of my clothes very well. What do you think? Should I just go ahead and buy Tide for $6.00 a jug?

I used to use only Tide. But it got so expenive Istarted using the stuff on sale, same thing with frabic softener, I use the store brand or whats on sale. I am an RN and get all sorts of things on my clothes, I have a 7 year old granddaughter who lives with me and I really haven't noticed any differeence in the cheap stuff over Tide. Except of course money.!
some of the costly stuff doesn't do a great job either! If you have really soiled clothes I'd do a presoak of about 1/2 hour.also adding a bit of bleach might help you out
Purex is a great cleaner. If you are concerned about the way your detergent works then you can add some 20 Mule Team Borax according to the directions. This is a laundry booster (and has MANY other uses besides laundry) that will make even the cheapest detergents clean like industrial soaps.
Well, you cant beat the price for my laundry soap. I make my own using a bar of soap, 1/2 c. washing soda, 1/2 c. borax and some water (can find recipe online just do a search). I bought 1 box of washing soda and 1 box of borax last year (each less than $2) and I am still making recipes out of it. It costs me about 75 cents to make a batch of detergent that lasts a few months. And it smells nice and cleans perfectly!! Cant beat that with a stick!
I use Tide, and since the gas prices have been so high i started to cut down on name brands and got come cheap stuff, and it made me break out in a rash, so i switched back to Tide, but i'm sure it's just me and that it should be fine for others.
I use the cheap stuff and think my clothes turn out just as clean as when I use the pricey stuff. However, I do notice that the expensive detergent, especially Tide, makes more suds than the cheaper brands. I don't think the extra suds make much of a difference, though.
I've used Purex for years, however all oil should be spot treated before washing. I use Chlorox spot cleaner for stubborn stains and work in into the fabric well with a old tooth brush, Lestiol also works very well on oil stains, treat the areas the same working it in with a tooth brush...
no you did the right thing i buy things on sale and i buy cheap laundry soap and it gets my clothes clean. in my opinion it is a waste of money to buy that high priced stuff.
This is what I do... I use Tide, Purex, All (all on sale including coupons) and pre-soak laundry. I use SHOUT/CLOROX to treat spots
I think the cheaper stuff is just as good if your clothes are not real dirty, ( like mechanic or construction worker). I usually fill the wash machine and put in the soap then clothes and let the machine agitate for a few minutes and then open the lid and let the clothes soak for 30 minutes or so. I have had no problems.. Same with fabric softener, I use the cheap stuff..
