I too used to really have a problem keeping my house clean. Then I found a website that has helped me sooo much! www. flylady.net. She teaches you how to take baby steps in keeping your house clean. It is all about not feeling overwhelmed and using a timer and doing what you can for 15 minutes at a time. Using a timer has changed my life!!! Check out her website and I hope it helps you!! She is so encouraging!
Organization. Bins and boxes, seriously.
Your problem is not a quick fix. Consider what makes your room cluttered. Is it that the closet is not in the right configuration or that the garbage can is not in the right place? I had the same issue with my living room until I moved an end table away from the front door. Some times it really is a matter of fung shui or how just how you feel about the room. Get in touch with your feelings about the room consider the small things like the garbage can or taking off the closet doors and putting up curtains.
Start with 3 things, throw away trash, remove dishes, pick up clothes. Everything from then on will be easier with those 3 taken care of.
Try to adopt the "touch it one time" principle. In other words, when you put something down, make sure it is put in it's proper place. If you drop something on the floor, then you just have to pick it up later -- you're making yourself more work. When you take your clothes off, put them directly into the hamper, rather than on the floor. When you bring home papers from school decide whether you need to keep them or if you can throw them away and if it's throw away, do it immediately. Make sure that you have a small trash can in your room. Keep an expandable file or a drawer in your desk that is just for school papers. If you eat in your room, make sure you take dishes to the kitchen as soon as you are done with them. Go through some of your keepsakes and collections and decide if they are really important to you. If they are not, donate them or throw them away. If you have craft things like for jewelry making or something, buy an inexpensive plastic 3-drawer unit (approximately $10) to store things in. Go through your closet and get rid of anything you haven't worn in the past year and things that don't fit you any more. This includes shoes! It is much easier to clean as you go then to have to deal with the whole mess right before a friend comes over. Congratulations on 1) recognizing that having a messy room is a problem and 2) deciding to do something about it! Summer is a great time to try to reorganize things and find a new system that works for you. Good luck!
