Have a "Pitch-it Pizza Party"! Get some friend to come over and just delve in. If it's clothes and you didn't wear it in the past two seasons, pitch it. If it's toys or something else you are too old for, pitch it. If it's garbage, pitch it! If it's something you don't absolutely, positively, with all your heart and soul love, pitch it! You can also donate all the stuff you don't want to local charities.

How cool of your mom adopting! It will be a different way of life but one that you will really appreciate later! Congrats to your family!

flylady.com is a wonderful place to start! good luck!
Get organized.. first
grab some boxes and mark ..
Throw out-- Stuff you don't need or is broken
Keep-- stuff you can't live without
Give away-- Good stuff you have outgrown but still good enough for someone else to enjoy..
Same with your clothes.. if you haven't worn them in a year .. I bet you never will again..sort them out and give them to charity..
Now don't try to do this all in a day..
Took my daughter about a week but geez she had enough stuff to open a store with..lol and only kept half..
Then re-organize your closets and drawers.. I bet you will have plenty of space left.. for your new stuff..lol
Have fun!!

PS.. Get a pal to help you.. might work!!
Get some friends together and make a night out of it. If I have a project I dread, I use my closest friend and we do it together. No matter how boring, it cann't be that bad. Think how cool it would be to give all the stuff you won't use to charities. Animal rescues in your area might want it to auction off to help with costs of vet bills, give it to a homeless shelter, freecycle, whatever...doing good for others (including your Mom and the child she wants to adopt which is very cool) always makes you feel great; so think of how amazing you will feel when this is all done :)
Get rid of anything you don't need or use in a 6 month average span! Sell it on eBay, craigslist, give it to a thrift shop, a friend... get rid of it. If you really need to hang on to it, consider storage boxes and stack them neatly out of sight.
Chuck everything into boxes, and store them somewhere out of sight. Maybe in a garage or a friend's if you don't have one?
Don't go near it or even think about it for one year..
If you have got through that year without needing anything in those boxes, you don't need the stuff, send it all - unopened - to an op shop or have a garage sale.....no maybe not that, as you put stuff out to sell, you'll realize you want it all back LOL
