How much does baking soda eliminate odor?

Question:I hear that it eliminates odors, my bro left for colorado for the summer and i just went into his room and it REAKED like cigarettes and dirty clothes, i put about a measuring cup of baking soda in his room and closed the door, will this elimate the odor a little bit or not?
