What causes some fabrics to pill?

Question:and how can I avoid this?

Answers:
Those fabrics have an attractive (almost velcro-like) texture, and when the lint is created, it isn't able to easily break the "surface-tension" of the fabric.

Preventative steps:
* Turn susceptible garments inside out before laundering.
* Load the washer loosely to provide free circulation and minimize abrasion on the garment.
* Use a shorter wash time for permanent press, knits, and delicates unless they are heavily soiled.
* Wash permanent press, knits, and delicates in separate load from articles that have a tendency to lint.
* Use a fabric softener to reduce static and prevent lint from clinging to the fabrics.

I COLED THE COTTON EFFECT!!
washing them in hot water and not turning them inside out.
i find that cold water and flipping the item inside out and then hanging to dry really helps.
If you cant hang dry , tumble dry on low or gentle cycle.
Probably the same thing your hair went though.
