Bought home w/a slight cigarette smell. After she moved, disc surfaces stained-cost $3K to clean-recourse??

Question:I've had the walls/ceiling washed and primed w/Kilz. Carpet shampooed twice. A/C vents cleaned. A/C serviced. Had fire reparation company thermofog. Gone thru at least 10 canisters of Oust/Neutra Air. Smell is much less, but still stinks to me. Is there any recourse w/previous owner?

Answers:
Sorry, the papers are signed and you bought the house, and everything with it.

Place small bowls of white vinegar around the house in inconspicuous places. The vinegar will absorb the odor.

Nope. Not her fault that you can't resolve the odor. It's not as though you wouldn't have noticed it going in.
sorry, but walked into that house prior to buying it, you knew of the smell then, so guess now your stuck with it...lights a smoke lol
You knew it going in, didn't you? You must have done a walk thru. If not, shame on you. Replace the carpet and be done with it.
there is no recourse, unless as a buyer you signed some contract saying the sale was contingent on having never been smoked in. Besides if the smell is that strong, you should have picked up on it during the initial viewing or inspection prior to closing.

Honestly, I think you would have been a lot smarter to replace any of the fabrics (carpet, curtains, etc) if it bothers you that much. Contrary to popular belief, the smell doesnt' stick into plaster or wood trim. Cleaning wood trim with oil soap and walls with TSP will remove any odors from the surface stains. You cannot get smoke smell out of carpets or curtains. You can make it fade, but on hot humid days it will come back. The best method for curtains is an ozone closet, carpets are simply replaced.

Anytime you buy a used home, you should expect to do a thorough cleaning at your expense.
And women have the Audacity to say men aren't clean !
I think we have seen otherwise with'' how clean is your house ''?
The bowls of vinegar from other contributors is a good idea , but i think I would like tom do what Odysseus did to the Maidens in the household Fumigate with sulfur and then Hang the Biche!
Women have such a brass neck until someone strangles them !! And then they want society to sympathies because their victims !?
Even if there was, hiring an Attorney would probably cost more than $3k. Sorry for the situation! I know you don't want to spend more money, but have you tried an air purifier?
get rid of the carpet...the carpet pad is probably stinky
have you cleaned the kitchen cabinets? washed all the windows?
there is no recourse with the previous owner
I don't think you have any recourse. Once the papers are signed, that's it. You need to REPLACE the carpet. That should help alot. I would also paint every room, walls and ceiling. The carpet holds the odor worse than anything. Good luck.
