How do you get mildew smell out of clothes?

Question:they don't have the mildew stains, just smell!! we have a very old, musty basement, and, if you leave clothes in the washer or dryer, even for a short period of time, they start to smell! any suggestions?? serious ones,i mean!!

Answers:
Use bleach in the machine without clothes to get the machine cleaner. Try the baking soda, but also try vinegar in the wash water.
You could also try borax powder. It works pretty well with regular detergent. You can find borax at WalMart in the laundry area.

wash them using a cup of baking soda ( if the smell is real bad let them soak for a while, then wash as usual
