How do you safely store dolls, toys, clothing, etc. in the basement?
Question:I really don't have room upstairs for all my sentimental stuff from my childhood, etc., and was thinking about storing them in the basement. My basement isn't totally under ground level, just half. I don't have a problem with flooding or anything, just a mildew smell. I was thinking of putting them in plastic boxes with tight-fitting lids, maybe duct tape around the edges, and something to absorb any smells. (mothballs, baking soda, clothes dryer sheets?) I don't want to get rid of them, but they need to be moved out of the way, before the dogs or kids find them. They're kind-of fragile, and I've had them forever. Any ideas? Thanks!

Your two major concerns are water damage and pests.
The best way to affront both of these problems is to buy large plastic storage bins available at Target, Walmart, etc. Large bins with near-airtight seals are usually decently priced. The second thing you'll want to do is put pest-repellant inside to keep away mice, bugs, moths, etc. There are several chemical products, such as moth balls, you can buy; organic products are also on the market at places like Whole Foods or organic websites. My grandmother swears by the dryer sheet, however. Dryer sheets, such as Bounce, not only keep pests away who can't stand the fabric softener in it, they also keep things fresh. I recommend several sheets and at $4 or $5 a box, you can't go wrong.
Get those jumbo zip Loc bags and put a dryer sheet in with the stuffed animals. It will be airtight and keep everything smelling good.
