A pair of socks: one has a hole in the heal, the other is OK. Discard the holy one only, or can them both?
Question:Should the good one be kept? There might be other good socks to match it with; don't want to waste a good sock, ya know. Should both the good one and the bad one be kept and worn as a pair until the good one wears out too, then get rid of both of them at the same time? Saving big bucks.

It would seem by your question that you'd be perfectly willing to wear the sock with the hole in it...each to his own.
If this is the case, then why waste a perfectly good hole?
Go ahead and wear the pair.
If your question was, "Should I try and find a third sock that matches the good one, and toss out the one with the hole so I can have two good socks to wear?", then the answer would be yes to that as well.
Next time you go shopping for a dozen pair of socks, buy all the same color and you'll never find yourself with this dilemma again.
Socks are not expensive, especially when you buy them in mulitiple packs. I'd can the pair and treat yourself to some new ones!

If the hole is noticeable, than you might try "darning" it.
Just take a needle and some thread and sew it up.until the other one does the same thing, and then either sew it up too, or go ahead and toss them.
I would not throw away one and keep the other...that makes no sense really.
If you can afford it, I would just throw them both away, and go and buy a multiple pack of new ones.you can get them fairly cheap at WalMart.

get an old light bulb and put it into the sock with the hole in it and sew it its very easy to mend a sock with a whole in it just make sure you got a light bulb and a string and needle and good as new people would never know
get the good one holed too. WEAR IT.

If you have multiple pairs of the same sock. Keep it, you are bound to loose one. If you don't have other like it, toss it.
If ya don't want to throw away the good one try wearing it as a glove in the winter season or darn the one which has a hole or buy a new pair...
Those socks can be used for so many things..holey or not! They're great for slipping over your hand for dusting - especially those pieces of furniture that are heavily carved.
They can be turned into puppets; stitched up and filled with rice for making heating pads; stitched up and filled with fiberfill and such and used as a draft dodger; put in the car to slip on when filling the gas tank..
Don't throw away....reuse!!
