How do you eliminate the smell of fish from garbage??

Question:My husband fishes a lot, and after cleaning the fish, he puts the remains in a zip loc bag and tosses the bag into the garbage pail in our kitchen. The smell is horrible, and when it goes outdoors to the main garbage pail, the smell attracts flies and the resulting problems. Our garbage pail reeks and I'm sick and tired of cleaning up the main garbage pail (he works different hours and he never cleans it out).

What can be done to prevent this smell from occurring? I've suggested burying the fish to him, but he says that will only stink up the yard.

Anyone have a solution to eliminating the odor? Also what can I use to clean out the garbage pail. I've even tried bleach and it doesn't fully clean it out. He won't clean it and I'm tired of the amount of time it takes and our neighbors are complaining about the odor!!

Answers:
I spray Lysol into the bag then around the trash can. I also get a good insect spray and spray it in the in door as well as the out door trash can.

Another thing I use is clean them on butchers paper, spray then roll the stuff up tightly, spray the outside of that then rap that in Newspaper, then rap that in the plastic bag sleeves that come with home delivery papers. Then spray cans and close the lid.

This will minimize/eliminate the odor and if any fly/bugs do get in the insecticide spray will kill them.

Do they have a fish-cleaning station near where he fishes? Can he clean the fish before bringing them home? I can't think of anything that would top the zip-lok bag, so the answer may be to stop the fish bits from coming home in the first place.
I would encourage you to have a serious talk with him about where he throws his fish trash. It's great that he has a nice hobby, but it's making alot of work for you.

Perhaps you might get another trash can just for his fishy stuff. The one you have you might try taking it outside and washing it with the hose and some more bleach or ammonia (but not together, cause it make a toxic gas) Let it soak for a good long time. I always prefer bleach for getting out really smelly stuff.

If you bury the fish, it will attract scavengers like skunks and racoons, which come with lots of other problems.
They have air conditioned garbage containers, also I hear that stainless steel, and silver dispell odors, on tv there is this device you rub your hands with, and it even removes onion smell.
Burn an azzload of incense.

Maybe get homeboy to take them fishguts elsewhere...

Good luck.
I believe if you scrub your trash can with a mixture of antibacterial detergent, baking soda and water it will eliminate the odor. Make sure that after you clean it you turn it upside down so it thoroughly dries, since a damp can will attract new flies. After the can is completely dry, pour cat litter in the bottom of can to help eliminate future odors, therefore lessening the attraction of new flies. Make sure your plastic garbage bags are tied tightly and your lid is always on your trash can. They do sell trash cans now that seal when you close them to help prevent fly infestation. I hope this helps!
