How did people make soap in older times?

Question:I need to know for a book I'm writing =]

Answers:
They would leach the lye out of fireplace ashes by pouring water over them and catching the runoff. Then they would take animal fat, for example tallow or lard, and melt the fat down in a big pot, stirring all the while. When the fat was melted and hot, they would add the lye, stir it for a while morem, and then pour it into pans to cool. After cooling, they cut it up into bars and stored in a cool dry place.

with lye.
