Are you supposed to use Fabric Softner in your washing machine and dryer?

Question:I use liquid fabric softner (Downy) with my wash. I also use dryer sheets (Snuggle). Someone just told me that you're only supposed to use one or the other. Is this true? Am I wasting my money using both?

Answers:
Yes; one or the other. Use neither on towels.

Only one is necessary.
Only one is needed.
Use only one or the other. The dryer sheets work for awhile but the fabric softner is in the fabric and lasts longer...at least I think it does.
well no you don't have to only use one you can use both but only one is necessary you don't need all that extra stuff you are kinda wasting your money cuz they do the same thing. i would just use the liquid fabric softener i feel it not only makes your clothes smell better but it actually works better than the sheets.
The liquid fabric softener for the washer should be more than enough.
just use one.go with the dryer sheets, they are cheaper than the liquid.
I use both as well, though really only one is needed. Though for me I often forget about my washing and do not hear when the rinse cycle begins, so I cannot put the fabric softener in, and thus rely on the dryer sheets. It's not harmful to use both, and the liquid that you add to the rinse cycle is generally more effective in truly softening fabrics than dryer sheets. But if you want to use them both, or use one as a backup in case you don't add the other, go ahead! Plus it's always a great idea to have dryer sheets on hand because they have so many varied uses: from removing static cling, to freshening up bags and the like that were exposed to smells that linger (ie cigarette smoke), to cleaning around the house!
Oh no, thats overkill with softner, you will cause a buildup in all things like your clothes and washing machine and dryer doing this type of practice, if you really want a nice fresh laundry that is soft and odor free and will not build up or leave residues on your clothes or washing machine and dryer and it leaves your clothes static free, just use White Vinegar in the rinse water, but first I would suggest running your clothes through a good cleansing wash and softening with one cup of White Vinegar without added detergent or any fabric softners, this will clean your wash and clean your washing machine and add extra years of service to your machine and your clothes and you won't be so heavily scented, you will also save lots of money on softening your clothes as vinegar is less expensive and less harsh on your fabrics, Vinegar is also touted as being the best disinfectant in the world, vinegar is an all purpose cleaner as well and help stop your washing machine from gumming up and causing you stains on your clothes and getting in the water hoses as well and stopping them up in the future your water lines will run clear because of the vinegar, When you use Vinegar as a fabric softner just fill your fabric softner dispenser as you would with your softners, you will see a difference in your clothes they will be brighter and whiter and cleaner smelling. Good Luck !
I like to use both... but that is just me.Too much fabric softener (Downy) can leave a dark stain your cloths and your cloths and towels can become water proof.
You are probably wasting money using both. What are you trying to accomplish? If it is fabric softness, I would stick with the liquid in the washer. Liquid fabric softener actually softens the water, making the clothes feel softer because there aren't hard water deposits on them. If it is to reduce static cling and have nicer smelling clothes, I would stick w/ the dryer sheets.
I use fabric softener unless I don't get to the washing machine in time, then I use a softener sheet. I noticed that the towels weren't as absorbent as they used to be and tried the white vinegar in the rinse cycle. Now I frequently use vinegar in the rinse cycle, it removes the built up softener and the towels become nice and absorbent again.

Have you heard that softener sheets, when used constantly, tend to restrict the air flow in the dryer vent and will eventually cause a fire? Take out the screen and wash it occasionally with hot water, dish soap and a brush to remove the built up residue from the softener sheets. Makes the dryer safer.
