I use a paste of baking soda and dish-washing liquid, and a scrubbing pad. It works great!

i clean my sink with baking soda, its soft and it hasn't scratch my sink yet. just pour it on splash a little water and let it set for a while that should do it
Rub stainless steel sinks with lighter fluid if rust marks appear. After the rust disappears, wipe with your regular kitchen cleanser.
Use a cloth dampened with rubbing alcohol to remove water spots from stainless steel.
Spots on stainless steel can also be removed with white vinegar.

There is a powder cleaner called Cameo which is specifically made for cleaning stainless steel. I used to find it at my grocery store. It does cause a chemical reaction, so there will be an odor when you use it. But it does a lovely job.
Do you know what the stains are? Hard water? Coffee? Kool Aid? Stainless steel cleaner and news paper works well?
