In a dishwasher, how do the dishes on the top rack get washed?

It depends on the dishwasher. Some have a rotating sprayer above the top rack. Mine doesn't but it has a collapsing cone that expands up the middle of the bottom rack and that squirts the dishes on the top rack.
Whatever you do, don't try holding the button in with the door open to watch it or you'll flood the kitchen floor like I did. LOL

There's a spinning arm usually under the top rack, and it will either fling the water onto the dishes on the top, or if it's like my dishwasher, the spinning arm actually has little sprayers that spray as it spins.
