Why does my washing smell bad if I don't dry it immediately?
Question:If I do some washing in the machine, if I don't get it dry immediately, or within an hour or so, it smells awful when I do eventually dry it..so much so that I have to wash it again :-( Even though the washing is basically clean, there's this acrid smell to it. Anyone know what causes this?
Answers:
hard water, plus there is no air movement in the washer, think of your socks in sneakers all day
Sounds like mildew. Try putting 1 cup of vinegar in the final rinse and it should negate the funky smell.
Mildew!

It depends on the laundry detergent you use!
It could be chemicals or minerals in the water. Do you have a water softener? That helps remove a lot of minerals and might solve the problem. The initial investment is high but in the long run it's really worth it.
cos the material gets most and humid...and it needs to breathe and dry out so it usally gets kinds 'sour' if u dont dry it soon afterwards.
it is the start of mold/mildew growing
If you leave your laundry in the washer too long, a mildew/mold effect happens and the odor will carry over into the drying process. It has to do with warm moisture etc. being allowed to sit in your laundry over a period of time. When this happens, I'd suggest just washing again and don't leave in the washer too long before drying. For strong odors, use 1 cup of white vinegar in the last rinse. It'll freshen your laundry and soften it at the same time.
My mom always said this was "souring". Yeh, it's just because you left it in the washer too long, mildew is setting in. Just like any damp closed off whole. Yeh, always rewash.
it sours!
I've had this problem too. I wash out the washer and it takes care of the problem. Run your washer with a cup of bleach or vinegar or baking soda in it. That should prevent the odor from coming back for a while.
You wash with warm or cold water instead of hot water, right? Bad news is that your laundry isn't really clean and the residual bacteria and mold spores multiply like crazy in a moist environment. Some possible solutions:
1) make sure washer is clean by running it without clothes with hot water and a cup of chlorine bleach
2) use hot water if appropriate for fabric
3) an extra rinse cycle might help
4) try changing detergent brand and be sure to use enough
5) add some powdered borax or washing soda along with detergent
6) prewash heavily soiled items
