How to do laundry?
Question:this may seem like a ridiculous question, but my mom has been getting on my case about doing my own laundry.
i have some simple questions:
i have a white shirt with color on it, does it go with whites or colors?
reds go on their own, but what about light reds, like a pastel or purple?
and what about underwear? still color sorted? wash on their own?

I bet if you ask your mom your laundry questions you will earn big brownie points and you won't piss her off by doing laundry in a way that might drive her crazy. Prevention is the key to harmony, grasshopper.
if she wants you to do your own laundry, she should be willing to teach you how. the white shirt can go with the whites. I put pink or purple with red, anything close to that color that won't get hurt by bleeding the color. all white can go together, no matter what kind of clothing it is. same with colors and dark colors, like jeans. wash jeans separately or everything can turn blue. watch your water level in the washer and your detergent level. too little is as bad as too much. don't overfill the washer or the clothes can't agitate and get clean. pretreat spots and stains. this site might help with other questions.
just put all the cloths in there and add a cup of detergent and set the water level to extra large and set the water temperature to cold wash and cold rinse...you mom will think you are a genius...by washing in cold water you will not wrinkle the clothes,or have to worry with them fading or transferring colors to other fabrics
If the shirt is mostly whiten and has been washed before (so you know the colored area won't run), wash with your whites (assuming you don't use bleach).
Anything in the red family can go together, although I'd wash a dark or very bright red separately the first time.
If you are worried about colors running, those Color magnet sheets work; you just throw it in with theater wash and it absorbs any loose dye.
Unless you really mess up your underwear, wash it with its color/water temperature group.
