How do you get rid of a mildew smell??

Question:The house i live in is really really old (over 100 years old) and the basement has a mildew smell some times you can smell it through the vent that connects the main floor to the basement... How do i get rid of it?? Any suggestions??

Answers:
I live in a house that was built in 1904!! Needless to say, I know the smell. Take an entire day and wash the basement walls with a bleach/water combo. Make sure there is good ventilation down there. If not buy some fans. If there are windows, open them and let it air out. If not you really need the fans and maybe even a dehumidifier. You need to get the moisture and mildew out. Keep it as well ventilated as you can.

very light mixture of bleach and water for walls and floors.cover any exposed dirt with plastic. be sure all wood is dry and painted.

I will clean the entire basement with clorox which will kill and desinfect in the same time. (tips: wear gloves, clorox can burn severely the skin).
You may not like my answer but the best way to get rid of a mildew smell is to find the source of the mildew and remove it. Bleach diluted with water often does the trick. Buy a trigger spray bottle (with a good trigger mind you, not the cheap ones) and dilute 1/20 bleach and water. Let it sit for a minute or two and scrub away the mildew with the course side of a sponge or a toothbrush (not your honey's).

I heard that Rona (don't know if where you live has these stores) carries a new product that kills mildew on contact and it's all natural with no chemicals whatsoever. It comes in a spray form. The trick will be in finding the source. Check your window sills - in older houses they are often the culprit where mildew is concerned. The only trouble is, you'll have to repeat this several times a year if it's your windows. Hope this helps.

Here's a link that may help your dilema, I so know that smell! The bleach works well, but this site had other suggestions.
