Mouldy windows?
Question:We've just moved into a student flat but it doesn't have double glazing and there is mould on the inside of the windows. I've heard this type of mould can be dangerous, am I right? And if so, what is the best way to get rid of it safely?
Answers:
Yes it is dangerous especially for Asthmatics. I am. Get some white, distilled vinegar. Put 50/50 vinegar and water in a spray bottle and do the windows and seals etc. Use a toothbrush to get in corners then polish off. (If you get it on any metal wash it off) This will help to stop it returning. Use this to polish wood as well. Grout in tiles.
Don't buy a special cleaner. They are poisonous. Vinegar kills bugs, but not you. Use on kitchen worktops and great on chopping boards.
Vinegar has more uses, you can buy a book about it.V,useful
I'm a pro housekeeper and this works. Smells like a chippy for only a short while, but goes.
Bottle of vinegar not expensive approx 58p, as apposed to a chemical filled expensive cleaner. Also when smell of these cleaners goes, the chemicals are still in the atmosphere and so getting into you.
Hope all goes well in your new digs.
this is caused by damp coming thru due to condensation. the best way to treat it is to thoroughly clean the windows and keep them as dry as possible. You'll never completely clear it though as the problem lies with the fact you are not double glased. I am double glazed but only got central heating last year and i had the smae thing, i even got mould in my built in cupboard. It's not massively dangerous but the spores will get on your chest if you dont keep on top of it.
Vinegar in hot water, plus vinegar will make the windows shine.
We had mold in the windows on our motorhome. That's caused from condensation. Buy a can of Lysol and spray it on it and wipe it off with a paper towel. If it's just on the windows, it will disappear eventually. REmember not to spread the paper towel mold to other windows. Use a new paper towel to wipe them clean. Wash your hands after.
hello,my husband is a ventilation engineer and has dealt with this problem many times.the main cause is lack of ventilation in the property and the cold of the single glazed windows cause the moisture in the air to condense which allows mould spores (which are present in every home) to grow on the pure water.Double glazing can sometimes help however it does not address the underlying problem of bad ventilation. What happens is the mould grows in a different place.the mould can be easily wiped off with a weak bleach solution, however .after washing the area must be treated witha fungicidal wash.if this is not done ,the bleached surface will grow more mould.to ensure correct ventilation,if extract fan is fitted in the bathroom it must be used often, and windows opened as much as possible.if all fails contact the landlord as they have a duty of care to ensure that the building is provded with adequate ventilation (part F building Regs) although stricltly apply to new builds they also provide a guidline for landlords to follow. Black mould is dangerous as it can exacerbate asthma.dont worry you can control this easily.good luck
Yes you are right by saying it is dangerous to breathe mold this can make you really sick, I can help you remove it, You can use undiluted Vinegar on a sponge or cloth and rub until removed orWipe away mildew
When you want to remove mildew stains, reach for white vinegar first. It can be safely used without additional ventilation and can be applied to almost any surface --bathroom fixtures and tile, clothing, furniture, painted surfaces, plastic curtains, and more. To eliminate heavy mildew accumulations, use it full strength. For light stains, dilute it with an equal amount of water. You can also prevent mildew from forming on the bottoms of rugs and carpeting by misting the backs with full-strength white vinegar from a spray bottle.
Good Luck !
dawn dish soap
i used 'Milton' - really for sterilising babies bottles but it works fine on window mould
