Only some of our laundry gets stinky anyone know why, or how to fix it?

Question:Our laundry is never left in the washing machine to get that damp smell, we always hang it out to dry it and then put it in an airing cupboard to air. We use a variety of washing powders and liquids and softeners. Occasionally one item 'gets the stink'. It's a sour, nasty smell and doesn't go with subsequent washes. Anyone know why and/or what we can do to get rid of it?

Answers:
blockage in your outlet pipe? if there is any food residue in the ubend it may reflux into th machine, especially if you have a dishwasher plumbed in at the same pipework. And jeeeSUS it smells bad. bit of soda bicarb down the sink overnight will usually clear it. (Make a thickish paste and run it in, leave and it will flush through the next day).
Used to live with a cat with a vile botty problem that would sit on my clothes, leaving her little 'trademark aroma' forever on whatever she'd squelched. Do you have one of these?

Try take the tray out (where you put the powder) and clean it out and underneath. You could do a really hot wash to get rid of any skankyness!
i know this sounds silly but you don't happen to own a male cat ? my tends to wee on cloths left on the floor sometimes and the smell is difficult to shift - just a thought !
It could be your water.
It is a possibility you are overloading your machine so your clothes don't get as clean and plus detergents are not always effective enough to get clothes really clean, only soap and additives can get clothes their cleanest and you may be adding too much fabric softner which holds in the odors, now I can help you get rid of that sour smell, just add one cup of White Vinegar to your wash water without any detergent added and run that through a complete wash cycle on the hottest water your laundry can handle, do not add any fabric softner as vinegar will soften your clothes saving you money on softners if added to your rinse when doing your laundry Vinegar is also the least expensive and will remove dirt and odors and is a great sanitizer and disinfectant it is also touted as being the best disinfectant in the world, when added to your rinse water on next wash add a half cup or add to your fabric softner dispenser this will also keep your hoses and washer clean and help to extend the life of your washer and the parts. Good Luck !
We had a friend that used to smell of sour milk all the time - discovered that he only smelled right when his mother stopped using Bold & a softening tablet together in the wash!
I'm not sure what would cause "Stinky" clothes except leaving them wet in the washer, but I heard (on Rachel Ray)that putting little Baking Soda in the washer with the laundry soap will take away any funky smells. I have tried it on a load that I forgot was in the washer and it took all the gross smell away. Hope this helps!
Ya borax or baking soda
it's called mildew. don't let the clothes sit damp. if it's the machine, you'll have to run a bleach cycle to clean it out. look up the proportions online.
It could be that your wash tub is clogged up and pushing the dirty water back up into the washer. Laundry detergent builds up in your basin pipes and if you're not watching the laundry it could be going back in your washer and you wouldn't even know it. If that is the problem, they sell stuff for the build up at Home Depot.
Does the door seal on your w.m. need cleaning? Is anything trapped in it?
i get that too on the odd occassion...strange. try putting fewer clothes into the machine..and also give it a pre-wash first..that might work.
Do an empty wash with some vinager added to the water. This should get rid of the smells. make sure its a hot wash though.
The problem is that your machine is not emptying properly, and/or you get feedback from the sink because of poor pipework, either get a plumber in to check, or check your pipework and post here again for resolutions.
My washing machine was always stinky when I used those gel sachet type washing liquids. Engineer recommended I use normal washing powder and I've never had the problem since.
the smell is cause by bacteria that breed when the fabric is damp.

if you can wash the items again on a hot wash 60+
that should work for more delicate items soak in dilute disinfectant then re wash.
always avoid putting clothes away damp because once they are folded they won't dry properly in an airer.
good luck in beating the stink!
