What is the best way to clean a heavily stained toilet bowl?

Question:The bowl is a normal enamel, the lid and cystern will probably have to be replaced but was hoping to not have to replace the bowl.

Answers:
Go to your nearest hardware store and pick up ultra-fine drywall sandpaper. It looks like window screen material.

This thing cleans big time and it's reusable. You do have to get your hands in there to do some rubbing but I'll tell ya it works so good I will never be with one.

go to hillyard.com they have a great cleaning solution called CSP cleaner
2 things. its called awsome the dollar store has it but it works great i worked for a cleaning co that used it after that pour a gal or more of bleach close the lid and let it sit over night
My favorite bowl cleaner is "The Works". I have seen it do some amazing cleaning. The "Awesome" cleaners really do work well also. The person above me said use the stuff then pour a gallon of bleach and leave overnight. Make sure you scrubb and flush the Awesome away before you put in clorine bleach.
Bleach mixed with other cleaners can create deadly fumes that can kill you before you can even leave the room!

Here in the US a new complete quality toilet is around $100.00. 2 bolts and a wax ring is all that is needed to install it. If the tank needs replacing you may want to consider just replacing the entire thing.
bleach
Believe it or not, the tablets you put in water to clean dentures works great and you don't have to scrub. Put 3-4 in and let it bubble and soak for about 15 minutes. (I worked with a girl whose 2 aunts lived together and the one would get mad at the other for stealing her tablets to clean the toilet. I asked the co-worker if it worked and she said you could almost drink out of their toilet when she did this.)
use clorox. let it seat for a while and rinse.
Steradent tablets [for cleaning dentures] or Coke a Cola. Both work a treat.
