I'm not sure there is a preferrer footage. I always considered how many clothes I would be hanging and the space available. When my family was big, they were farther apart. There are bolts that are clothesline tighteners and when it starts to droop, you tighten it.
My mother used to use props under ours many years ago.
There isn't any particular distance. The farther apart the posts, the more the line must sag to carry the load without breaking.
the ones i have done are 20 to 25 feet apart, with 4' in concrete so they will not give under harsh weather
Mine are 40 feet apart and about 80 years old. This size is large enough to hold laundry for a big family :)
Instead of rope however, my line uses steel wire to support the weight of all those clothes.
It really don't matter how far your poles are apart, what does matter is how far you put the poles in the ground. Make sure you sink them in concrete at least 2 foot if not 3 to keep them from leaning in from the weight.
Mine are 47' apart. This allows me to buy a 100' line. Sagging is not a problem. They make small "hooks" that look lika a distorted "C" I hang enough clothes to make a sag then I "hook" one of these on the line. They have rollers that allow them to move on the line. I finish hanging the rest. Yes, there are now 2 "sags", but neither touches the ground.
