How can you clean a rusty iron pot?
Question:I have an iron pot which is covered with rust. what is the best way to clean the rust and restore the pot?
Answers:
Scrub the pot with a scotch bright pad (do not use steal wool the steal wool will leave fibers that stay in-bedded in the pot and get into your food and will promote more rust in the micro pits it creates), rinse, dry thoroughly. After completely dry rub with lard (not veg oil) inside and out it is cheep and doesn't create a sticky residue like oil. Place foil on the lower rack of the oven with edges folded up to catch the drippings. Bake the pot at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. This will seal the iron. Wash with mild soap and hot water. Repeat as needed or cook bacon in it from time to time to restore seal.
You will never restore the pot to its original condition. You can scrape off what rust is loose and with a sanding disk removed the rest as much as possible. Get the disk that are made for sanding metal not wood.
Remove all the rust that you can with a SOS pad and dry throughly Rubb pot down with vegetable oil and place into low oven 250 degrees for about an hour rub on more vegetable oil and bake again . Let cool over night and remove excess oil with paper towel If still rusty scour with SOS and reoil ,,,bake until clean Never put into dish washer It will ruin a pot If you have access to a wood fire you can put pot into fire and remove alot of the rust Then you will need to reseason with oil and bake
