How do I get smoke smell out of leather couch?
Question:I bought a used leather couch; nice, but has a faint smokey smell. Does anyone know who to get the smoke smell out ?
Answers:
Short of having the couch re-stuffed and building a new frame there is almost nothing you can do to completely eliminate smoke. There are butane odor eliminator products that do a really good job though. Look for them in either the auto section as "odor eliminating" air fresheners or in commercial air-fresheners(the auto-sprayers in restaurant bathrooms). Take the couch outside(NO FLAMES EITHER!) and allow it to spray through the cushions. After it airs out you can clean the outside with a leather cleaner and condition it. The fabric cover on the bottom and the wood frame will always smell, so you may want to go the step of removing the fabric and using a primer called "kilz" on the wood - it seals in the odor pretty well. Smoke damage is the #1 reason insurance companies pay out for fires. I used to gut burnt houses and re-sell the stuff I salvaged, so trust me when I say it's impossible to completely eliminate a smoky smell. You can come close though.
stick a bowl of vinegar in the same room as the couch for a few days, Vinegar is supposed to draw odors of out materials.
try a scented steam cleaner.
A little Vodka mixed with water in a spray bottle...
Or some Febreeze, if yo can stand the smell of that stuff.
the best way is to :
Place out bowls of white vinegar. It helps absorb the smells.so does baking powder.
;)
My grandma used to do this ..
works every time!
