How do you use a steam iron ?
Question:Feel foolish for asking, but have never got the hang of steam irons, so always buy old fashioned, non-steam ones. But they are getting harder to find, and I notice that even the extremely domestically challenged seem to be able to work them. I have tried them in other people's houses several times, but to me, they are all rubbish, they leak water everywhere and don't get very hot.
Do you need to put special water in them ?
How do you stop them spilling loads of water on your clothes ?
Are you meant to empty them after you've finished ?
Can you use them like a regular iron, without steam ?
If you want to use steam - what do you do ?
I may be the last woman in England without a steam iron, and I'd be really grateful for any hints, thanks

I had no idea that there where other Irons around that where not steam irons since the 1930s (atleat in the USA). But a stea mIron is a steam Iron, no matter waht nation or political view you have. here are a few tips:
only put half the water in, there should be a guage that shows the water level.
set the temperature indicator to the maximum or a little less, unless you are ironing a fine synthetic.
to get steam in a burst, as you hover it over the clothing about 1 inch , you tip the iron back, on it's heal just a little, the water will rs uh against the coil, and a burst of steam comes out the holes, some have a type of steam burst button.
you should always drain the water, it can corrode the coil, and hard water deposits can build up.
also, if you ae usingspray starch on your clothing, once you spray it, lightly run your flat hand, palm to the clothing, over the sprayed area to gently push it into the material, this prevents flaking of the starch from a hot iron, steam or not.
get a steam iron with a teflon bottom, not a cheap shiny bottom one, it worth the few extra in cash you will spend, from the grapping and wrinkling the others cause.
If you buy a cheap iron, you get a cheap Iron, I don't know what they go for in the UK, but buy a median price one , with that Teflon or no stick bottom plate.
you don't need high heat, just enough to make the steam, if your using a steam iron without heat, you may be disappointed that the bottom surface is not hot enough, but with steam, the steam does the pressing, not the high heat and heavy weight, that why good steam irons are also lighter than no steam irons
hope these tips help you somewhat
Carefully.. :-)
I use hot water from the kettle, then you don't have to wait for it to heat up.
You do not have to empty it, but it will make it last longer if you do.
Yes, it can be used without water but then switch the steam off.
There should be a selector or push button to select beween steam and no steam.
Enjoy.
read the instructions. it's quite easy.
you dont need special water just tap water will do, when your iron water doesnt spill out only thing that comes out is steam, make sure when it cools down you empty it out and put fresh water in every time you use it.
I'm a American bloke - warning! LOL
Steam irons are easier. Faster.
Don't overfill.
Filtered water is better.
Empty after use.
Can be used MT.
Just turn on appropriate setting, let heat, and keep them moving. They get wrinkles out quicker. Really.
Okay?
Please don't feel foolish. The only stupid question is the one that is not asked.
Sepcial water? Would recommend distilled. Although, my mom used tap water. They don't spill loads of water on your clothes, just occassioally a drop or two. Just please be careful of the angles of how you place the iron over our clothing.
Yes, you can empty the iron's water resevoir, however, you don't need to really. Yes, you can use them regularly without steam.
To use the steam, (at least with my iron), putting it somewhere in the range of temp for steam ironing, is what brings forth the steam while ironing. As you are pressing the fabric, steam comes out the bottom holes. There may also be a red button to push for extra steam, I think (as I recall) that is how you can end up getting drops of waer on the fabric.
For American irons (I'm in the USA), the hottest temps are in the steam setting part of the iron settings. I have ironed both ways. Also, what I usually do, is when I do iron, I put the clothing right-side-out, for the ironing, then put it back properly when I am done, and hang up the item.
Enjoy! Take care.
it should come with instructions so read them befor using it cause all makes and models change, i have a steam iron and you just have to press a button for a small blast of steam to come out, just as easy as normal irons!
