Cleaning a carpet. (without the proper equipment)? Help?

Question:each year we clean around the house (a bit like spring cleaning e.t.c) i would like to know how to clean a carpet without having to get a carpet cleaner company in or a rug doctor. i began to scrub the carpet with water but it became damp n a smell occurd. what other ways can i clean the carpet?

Answers:
there is this foamy carpet cleaner thing that you can spray on the carpet stains and then get a realy thick brush that seems like it has plasticky bristles and just scrub. it's tiring and your arms start to hurt but it works.

I don't remember which cleaner I've used, but it was in a blue can and worked great! And, it has a pleasant fresh scent to it that stays on a while after you're done cleaning the carpet.

Having children in the home, I found the best way to spot clean the carpet is with a little water, baking soda, and Dish soap mixed together. Mix it in a bowl with Hot water, and scrub the spot you want cleaned, and then take a dry towel and lay it over the spot, stand on it or push on it to retrieve as much moisture as possible out of it. Then make sure you a fan or something going in that room to help the carpet dry faster, and not leave that mildew smell.
go to your local vacuum cleaner business. they have all kinds of used small cleaners to purchase for the home.

it is well worth your money to invest in a Hoover steam cleaner. I would not take anything for mine. I got mine at Lowes. It pays for itself the first time.
