How do you sterilize a sponge in the microwave?
Question:I've hear you can sterilize sponges in the microwave...wasn't sure if this was true or not, or if anyone has actually done it and how you actually do it.
Answers:
I like to wet the sponge and put in the micro. for about 3 min.. Anymore than that and you might dry the sponge out and set it on fire. You can also put the sponge in the dishwasher as well..
ea sponge 30 sec. u can even do u'r wash rags as well so if u have 2 sponges... 60sec... WHAT.. they will b very hot.
Yes, and it depends on the wattage of your oven, but you need to wet the sponge and then nuke it for (I think) a minute or so. You can also combine this with cleaning the oven because the steam released from the sponge will soften any cooked on spots and you can then wipe the inside out with a paper towel. Oh, and of course the size of the sponge. And, I wouldn't perform surgery with them, but it does kill the bacteria that grows in our kitchen sponges.
Acccording to the students that figured this out they said you have to wet the sponge and then put it on the highest setting for 2 minutes.
Always wet it before you put it in the microwave. I ususally put it for minute and use a separate paper towel or sponge to wipe up the microwave. Might as well do two things at once.
You wet the sponge and wring out excess water. Then put it in the microwave on high for 1-2 minutes.
I put my sponges in the dishwasher. Have you ever scorched wet fabric (including sponges) in the microwave? Ugh.
Sponges are convenient and reusable, but they carry a big problem. If they're used all day, all over the kitchen, they can pick up a lot of bacteria and viruses along with the spills and splatters. Luckily there is something in nearly every kitchen that can clean sponges, and it doesn't just clean them, it sterilizes them: The microwave—it's not just for popcorn anymore.
Instructions

Rinse the sponge with clean water. Be sure the sponge is wet.

Microwave it on the oven's highest power setting. An ordinary kitchen sponge should take about 2 minutes.
Step Four
