If its a big spot, remove as much as possible with you fingers,
then go to the iron paper method. Be sure to use a clean part of your paper each time so you do not spread the problem, you may end up having to give your carpet a trim ! Hair dryer might work, never tried that, am old still iron !
You can also put ice in a zipper bag and lay on spot and scrape it off as much as possible.( insulate with a towel )
Stay away from the removal products, they create an oily sport you still got to clean.
You did not state the type of carpet, makes a big difference in how you remove wax or gum and tar. Wool -nylon- etc..
A hair dryer and newspaper works well good luck
so what were u melting wax for..
you don't... what you do is you carefully cut out the offending piece of carpet... and then you find something heavy that is roughly the same size... a la garden gnome or suchlike..place gnome or other inanimate object neatly over removed piece of carpet and make it a feature... voila... problem solved
fold up some newspaper or even paper towels and lay it over the wax. turn on an iron and iron over the paper.
this will melt the wax, and the paper will absorb it.
if that doesn't work (which it always has for me) I think they sell wax removal products in the store that are essentially like pouring oil into your carpet. They work in the same way that butter gets gum out of hair - it's effective, but makes another mess.

Put ice on the spilled candle wax. When the candel wax hardens you will be able to pick up the wax with your fingers. You may need to repeat a couple of time to get all the wax out of the carpet.

Do what Amy suggests and then wash area with ammonia. Ammonia is a good wax remover follow label directions
I've heard that a white cotton towel and an iron will pull up wax. Just keep using different sections of the towel each time you lift up.
I've also heard that wax paper and an iron work as well.
