Why won't my new Whirlpool Dishwasher ever stop washing?

Question:I start it with normal options, air dry, etc. It says to allow at least 70 minutes, but this thing runs for hours and never even makes it to the dry cycle before I hit the cancel button. Huge waste of water and electricity. There's got to be something I can do besides buy a new one. Anyone experience this or know of a fix? I've tried running hot water in the sink next to it to bring the water temperature up before starting, doesn't help. Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Answers:
I know most new ones have sensors that monitors the cleanliness of the water to decide when the dishes are clean and doesn't rely on a specific time cycle. It's possible you dishes have a lot of caked on food which will increase the wash time. I would still question it though if you are accurate when you say "hours". You may have a defective sensor or inadequate water pressure.
