Help - Clean Electric Stove Top Coil?
Question:I need help. What is the best way to clean the electric stove top coil? How do you remove the coils? My stove top has to be 20 years old. When cooking sometimes food/liquid spills on the coils, there is the worst burning spell. I've tried wiping it down with water & joy which works sometimes however, most of the time some residue remains & the fumes are unbearable (even with the windows open) for the kids. Is this normal or do you think I need to replace the coils or the entire stove top? Many thanks in advance.

Stove Burner Cleaning
The best way to clean stove burners is to gently pull them out of the stove top, and wash with warm, soapy water. Use a gentle detergent such as that used to wash dishes. Do not submerse them or allow the electrical connection to get wet. If there is food or burnt particles stuck to them, use baking soda as a cleanser. Use it as you would a cleansing scrub, or if you have stubborn stains you can make a paste with baking soda and water and let it sit for 30 minutes, then scrub. Be sure to rinse them thoroughly with clear water. Depending on the condition of the burners you may not get them just like new (if they are scratched, worn, etc.), but you should be able to get them thoroughly clean. To prevent buildup and burned on food, wipe burners thoroughly during your regular kitchen cleaning ritual. =)
If your coils are original to the stove top, it's probably time to replace them. As they age, they start to heat inefficiently and can cause hot/cool spots in your pan. If they are a standard style, they should just unplug from your stove top.
As far as cleaning them, you might try a magic eraser, or just lots of elbow grease. Good luck!
