Help with strange discolorations on towels?

Question:Ever since I moved to Texas (hard water) five years ago I have been ruining my colored bathroom hand/face towels. They quickly develop multiple tan to orange spots that eventually discolor most of the towel. It happens to a lesser degree with the bath towel and even pillow cases. This makes me think there is something on my hands and face but I only use a small amount of standard Neutrogena-type products and have switched products many times without an end to the problem.

Of note, my clothes, comforter and furniture are never discolored which would seem to support the face lotion possibility. I also wonder if it could be water-related since it never happened beforeTexas and the towels are always used to dry my hands and face during the day. Or maybe its a combination. But no one I know ever has this problem despite using the same water and similar skin care products.

Has anyone ever heard of this kind of thing before?

Answers:
sounds like rust stains from the dryer, or the washing machine.may need to clean them out!

or a tinted foundation, makeup, or sunless tanner!

Sometimes there are chemicals in acne-fighting products that can discolor fabrics, so your face-products are definitely a possibility.
Sounds like iron.

Try a water softener tank...it is cheaper than powdered iron removers in the washtub.
I'm positive it's the chemicals from your acne treatments. I use this stuff called Acne Free from target and when I used my towels for it it would leave small orange/tan spots. I think it's the acidic stuff you apply with a cottonball or whatever, I usually just use a towel and thats probably why.
Well I can tell you it's not the water. If you wash your towels alone are you putting soap with bleach in it. If you are that might be the problem. ALso it could be the combination of the face product and the oils in your face. But it's not teh water. Check your laundry soap and make sure it doesn't hae bleach in it.
I have the same problem, only I live inOhio. The answer to my problem is that I have a exess level of iron and rust in my water. This can come from your water sourse and/or the water lines in your home. It always seems to be worse on my towels and dish towels because they are always used to soak up water in one way or another. I find filtering the water to my home makes a real difference. You can get a filtration system at any home improvement store and believe me it's a whole lot less expensive than replacing the ruined items all of the time. If you use oxy clean or something like it to wash the stained items in for a few weeks it will take out most of the discoloation once the water is filtered.
Yup. It's the water. Try using a water softener and if that doesn' work try one of the Stain Devils.
