Yes. Water won't do anything to the material, neither make it shrink. However, the gown may loose its form, such as some crease, which was ironed on with starch or other stuff. You need to make sure all the materials used on the gown is polyester because different materials may react to water differently (such as shrinking). It is also difficult to iron at home after wash if you don't have the equipment such as the things the tailors/dry cleaners use to iron the shoulders and sleeves, etc.
i would say yes as long as you use something like Woolite and then hang dry. Don't put it in the dryer at all.

Don't wash the dress in the bath, or use any water at all. There is another way to clean this dress without water. There is a product on the market for dry cleaning items at home in your clothes dryer. The brand name is called Dryell, and its fairly inexpensive and it does work, but mainly for items which are only slightly soiled like perspiration or dust. It doesn't work as well on heavily soiled items like wine, coffee/tea or cosmetic stains. Those would still require professional cleaning.
If you have any doubts I wouldn't do it.

Answer this. Is there a sewn in slip? If there is, washing it may shrink one of the fabrics and not the other thus, ruining the gown. If there is not a slip, you will displace the dye in the garment and have patches that are lighter than others, making it look stained and/or old. Stick to the label. If your drycleaners thinks it needs special attention, they will tell you and ask if they can "wet" clean it. In doing that, they spray the whole dress with the cleaning agent and let it totally air dry before the cleaning process. They would only do this if you had a great deal of spots on it.
