Is it better (for the enviroment) to do your washing on a long 30 degrees wash or a quick 40 degrees wash?

I short 30 degree wash with the energy coming from a solar water heater or renewable energy. You can purchase renewable energy for an increased cost (check with your power company).
short cold only would be best wouldn't you think?
less water and no heated water will help with power saving
and water availability, less detergent will lower the amount of phosphates in the water supply also

To answer the question, a quick 40 degree wash.
I do a lot of my wash in cold water but would rather do it on a cooler day and spare the air if possible or do it at night time and let hang out to dry overnight.
