How can I remove a mildew stain from a swimsuit?
Question:I found my daughters brand new swimsuit in her room, wet, under a wet towel! I threw it in the wash right away but didn't dry it. It looks like it has a few small spots of what must be mildew. (brownish dots) Is there any way to get it out??
Answers:
A mixture of salt, vinegar, and water should remove mildew stains on most fabrics. Use up to full-strength vinegar if mildew is extensive.
Use trisoduim phosphate. (TSP) it cleans mildew out of any surface. You can buy it at Lowe's, home depot, target, walmart.. Basically anywhere that sells cleaning products. TSP works excellent and it want ruin your swimsuit.
Mildew Removal from Swimsuit
You should be able to get the mildew stains out of your swimsuit by soaking it in warm soapy water and borax. Or, combine 1/4 teaspoon of color safe bleach and 1/4 cup of 3% hydrogen peroxide. With a clean cloth, gently rub the stain until it is gone. Launder the garment, and dry in the sun if possible.=)
Pour undiluted white distilled vinegar into a spray bottle. Vinegar is great at getting rid of mold/mildew, and it also eliminates the bad odor. Spray the vinegar onto the affected areas. Let it sit for several hours, ideally outside in the sun.
Use warm, sudsy water to wash it. Rinse it and let it dry in a clean, dry place.
The brownish spots may be "rust mold" rather than mildew, which is usually grey or black.
The juice of sorrel leaves is a "folk remedy" for rust mold removal.
Sorrel is a hardy perennial herb often grown in pots for kitchen and dye pot use; its claims to fame are as a meat tenderizer, and with an alum mordant, it is a green dye.
