Is there any way to keep maggots from growing?

Question:I hate throwing out the trash during the summer! It has been so hot that when I throw out the garbage in the trash can becuase it is kept outside it is full of maggots!! Is there anything I can do to keep them from filling my trash recipticle?

Answers:
Wash the inside of your garbage can with a diluted bleach mixture to clean out any food residue.

Then make sure you take your trash out frequently enough that you can tie the bag tight. The key to stopping maggots is to make certain that flys can't get to your garbage both inside the house (can with a lid) and outside the house, bags tied tightly. If you happen to tear a bag, put it in another bag so there are no holes.

Ironic enough, you need to bring the garbage's temperature down close if not below freezing. I don't thing dousing your garbage cans with poison is the smartest idea.
