What's the best way to wash a down comforter?

Question:I don't want to ruin it, and I am not exactly sure how to go about it. It's not one of the one's that is sectioned off into squares, so I am afraid that all the feathers are going to end up it a lumpy mess off in one corner or something.

Answers:
ooo take it from someone who has made the mistake once - take it to a dry cleaner...

Take to dry cleaners with a wheel barrow full of money.,
It's really best to have it done by a professional, and only every few years.

If you must wash it, don't use your home machine. Use one of the largest machines at the laundromat.

You don't want to wash a down comforter. It has to be dry cleaned.
I had one and would take it to the laundromat. They have larger washers and dryers there. I would suggest drying the comforter with a pair of sneakers (clean of course) or some tennis balls to help even out the down feathers as it dries. Sometimes they can get bunched up during washing and this helps! Good luck!

there is no way to wash it yourself unfortunately. down comforters and pillows need to be dry cleaned. it is the only way to keep it nice and fluffy. if you wash it yourself it will flatten and clump together. i would call around and check on pricing at various dry cleaners so you can get the best deal.
don't wash it at home. it takes waaaaaaaaay to long to dry. I took mine to A Cleaner World and it only cost me $25.00. Good luck!
The only way to do it is by hand. I had to clean ours after an accident by the cat. I had to do it by hand, pushing the feathers away from the area and then working at it.

Really try not to get the feathers wet. Some say you can probably clean it conventionally once or twice but after that it gets all ruined. The feathers can get nasty and even mold.

I just didn't want to take the chance. Spot clean. Push all the feather away from the area your cleaning.
I have 4 down comforters and I wash them all (seperately) at home ! I wash mine about 1 a month. The nice thing about down comforters is that when they get wet they reduce in size in nothing... I have done them at the laudrymat in a double capacity machine, I've washed 2, with a regular comforter... I've had no problems. Just put it in the dryer with a couple tennis balls to fluff it back up again... Hope this helps..Good luck..
