Powder soap tends to get messy , I always use liquid soap.
why does it only have to be ladies that answer this question. that is sexist. but your answer is TIDE with bleach alternative. that will get anything out.
I personally think it depends on what you like. Because I am a college student, with very little money, I like to use the cheapest stuff out there and it tends to get my clothes clean. It also depends on if you are allergic to any soaps or detergents.

they all work about the same if you have a he (high efficiency) washer you should use the appropriate laundry soap, if you are allergic to fragrances or dyes use all free and clear
Tide is the best, but alot of people are allergic to it. If this is the case with you or you want something that costs less, buy anything that comes in a green bottle cause it will always smell the best. : )
Whisk! And any spot cleaner with 'oxy' in it. I use the Clorox brand spot remover with the oxy in it. This stuff works great! Good Luck!
i like wisk. its kinda on the expensive side but it cleans well, is great on keeping whites white and colors in good shape.

Liquid Tide with Bleach is my favorite. It cleans well and the liquid soaps are better for your plumbing.
Tide does work the best, and leaves a fresh clean scent the longest, its also the most expensive!
I definatly follow all laundry soap with fabric softener-
my favorite is Snuggle Vanilla and lavender in a pink bottle
ladies love it!! put it in the rinse cycle of your washing machine, or in the washer has that handy dandy cup in the center of it place it in there when you load everything up and its already to go.

Depends on what you are washing. Woolite or Zero is great for cold water fine washables. For everyday loads any brand will work as long as you like the results and are not allergic to it. For real nasty dirty stuff Tide with bleach is very good but the smell is too overpowering. Any of the non scented free and clear brands should work for most people. Cheer brand has an advantage of not fading dark colors. Trial and error is the best way to see what you like best. You should ask the men what they think.
I personally like gain ..especially the new joyful kind.apples and mangos maybe??!! But I have a front loader high efficiency washer and have to use HE brand and Gain dont make the joyful in HE...but i use the fabric softener ;)
Norman to be honest with you I have not found any detergent to be superior to one another, but what I did find was a cheap bar of Laundry soap grated up and mixed with washing soda and borax to be the most superior of anything
