Is there a single appliance that is able to do both wash and dry clothes?

Question:Doing a single load of laundry would be more convienient if the clothes washer could also dry the clothes. It would same a trip to the laundry room if one didn't have to move the clothes from the washer to the dryer. It seems like it should be technically possible to combine the two functions in a single machine. Dishwashers wash and dry dishes, why can't clothes washers do the same?

My Mom had one thirty plus years ago. What a piece of JUNK! It broke down all the time. Mom had a service contract on it (thank God) so when it burped she didn't hesitate to call Sears. The repairman knew us so well we sent each other Xmas cards.

They can. My grandmother in the 50’s had an appliance that both washed and dried the clothes. The machine is coming back into vogue. Check out http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stor...
Yes there is one. I know Best Buy carries one and I think Lowe's does also. They are pretty pricey though.
Yes and here it is

They do exist - however all the ones I've ever come across breakdown more frequently than normal washing machines. I think it is because there is an inherent conflict between the two jobs the machine has to do. Best to have two separate dedicated machines.
these machines are commercially available but it takes a rather long time to complete a load of laundry and they don't tend to be very energy efficient. While you have to have the connection to a water source for the wash cycle you don't acutally have to vent them outside for the dry cycle on many models. I actually investigated this option for a small condo I bought but decided to remain with the separate unit system once I factored price, cost to operate and convenience into the equation
I had a combination washer dryer back in the early 70s, and you're right - they're very convenient.. BUT, they're also very unreliable after a while. All that lint that you find in your regular dryer filter gets wet, gums up the works and makes the load dry more slowly. The one I had was from Sears and it never ran correctly as it didn't have a filter for the dryer function. Still, when it was working it was great as it would pre-rinse cloth diapers, wash them, put in the fabric softener and dry them. Fortunately, my daughter potty trained early because the machine barely lasted past the 2 year warranty.
