Answers:
Wash like colors together.
Detergents vary and some of the cheap ones work just a good as others. Its what works for you level of dirt. A guy is going to get more dirty than a granny. She can probably wash her robe and granny panties in plain water and they are clean. But you may need a laundry booster agent like Borax. It really is one of the best laundry tools to get. Its been around a long time and works.
Most people put too much in the washer. Yes they say they can handle 22 towels but they were clean to begin with. The more times a piece of clothing agitates itself to the bottom and back up the cleaner it will be. More clothes means less room to agitate. The more clothes and tight it is in there the more torn up and stretched your clothes get also.

Make sure the washer is filling up all the way also.
I try to balance out a load when you put it in. Example is don't put all 4 of your heaviest items on one side and the socks on the other. Evenly distribute by weight.

is it possiable you put too much in at one time? if you put too much at once they won't all get cleaned, just put them back in an rewash what didnt come clean the first time
here's how i do it
Turn washer on(what ever setting i need)
Open laundry soap pour correct amount in cap
pour laundry soap into washer
Put clothes in,
shut lid
wait till it's done
The warmer the water, the better the detergent will work. If you're not happy with the results with Wisk, try Tide with bleach.
If you have really bad stains on your clothes, you should use something like Shout! and let it set on the stain for a couple of minutes. Also, are you mixing your darks with your whites? That will always make your clothes dingy. Tide concentrated stuff works probably the best, but is hard on the budget. I use Melaleuca stuff because it has no phosphorous which will contribute to dinginess.
Good luck!
Im not quite sure how your washing your clothes, but its very simple if you use a washer and dryer..if your washing your clothes by hand than you should probably invest in a washer! It may also be your detergent, try using a different detergent and see what happens. If your clothes still come out dirty than its probably how your washing it, if you need tips on washing clothes try googling it, otherwise its pretty simple! ;]
try using a real detergent like Tide, and pre-treat stains with some Shout before washing...try getting a Martha Stewart book...

Depends on what you mean by clean? Stains that weren't gone, or easy to remove dirt that was still there?

For stains that just won't go, I recomend OXI CLEAN Laundry stain remover, it also works great on carpets.

You may be washing regular clothes on the delicate cycle, or you might want to try using bleach on bleach-safe clothes. Also be sure to remove lint from your dryer every load, so it dosen't spit back out on your clothes!

If you've over loaded the machine the clothes won't get a proper wash and the really dirty stuff will stay dirty this always happens when I'm in a hurry and don't take the time to check the level of dirt on my boys clothing so they need to be done again.
