I have flat feet and use cushiony gel (half) insoles. I got them from the pharmacy.. maybe they are even available at Target or Wal*Mart. I think they are Dr. Shols.. they really help. Since they support my arch, I walk more correctly and stand more comfortably. The ones I use are nearly clear gel with a blue and red mark inside and the words "SOF SOLE".
The other option is to go to a podiatrist. They will recommend the right "orthotics-prescription insoles". I went to the podiatrist and these are the ones he prescribed.
I would suggest a visit with a podiatrist.
A Podiatrist (foot doctor) can help him so much! He would prescribe arch supports to be specially made for inserting into his shoes. This would be a great relief to him. If he has medical insurance, his primary physician could refer him to a podiatrist. That way, the insurance would pay. The supports would also be covered.
Use the boots like kittos that have uneven and soft base avoid using boots of hard base.
You could always get Dr. Scholls shoes.

They're supposed to be the best shoes for any type of feet. :)
And it would be cheaper than a doctor visit. lol
he may have gout, have his doctor check for that! i have flat feet but they found i had gout & that's what was causing the pain, ham & gizzards kick it up a notch
Formation of the arch occurs at a very young age, and there is probably nothing that can be done anymore, but he might find that being barefoot as much as possible is more comfortable.
