Go to the grocery store and rent a carpet shampooer.

Scrub with vinegar diluted a little bit with water. Choose a wine vinegar or even white vinegar. NOT balsamic! The vinegar will cut the smell and then afterwards, scrub with a scented soap to ease away the smell of the vinegar.

If your carpet is a white or cream colour, clean with lemon instead of the vinegar. Lemon bleaches naturally, and the acidic quality will cut the smell.
try baking soda diluted in small amount of water
If it is just the smell that is the problem, try sprinkling plenty of bicarbonate of soda on the carpet, leaving overnight and vacuuming off.

I don't know if it will work for your particular odour, but it certainly got rid of the smell of sick off my carpet (thank you very much, my 6 year old son).
Hi there. Forget the carpet shampoo suggestion They are a joke Im a carpet cleaning professional and I highly recommend a product called Milgo or Milgo SR it will kill the enzyme causing the smell forever.
If you've already got the stain out, and it is just the smell, then Febreze spray is awesome. a couple of blasts and let it dry, and it smells fresh as daisies!
well put some vinegar on the spot then put baking soda on top after the vinegar has sat for a few minutes, the baking soda will bring the vinegar back up to the top..the downside is you will have created a little volcano and there will be a slight smell of vinegar, however after you do this youcan shampoo that spot and the vinegar smell will dissappear quicker
