Why do paper towels, and many tissue products smell so horrible and dirty? Am I the only one who's noticed?

Question:Whenever I've wiped my face with a clean towel (supposedly) out of a brand new package it smells awful so I'm using only real towels. I know its likely the paper making process-I've smelled a paper factory and its awful-I just wondered what makes that smell-please refrain from all the obvious poop jokes or anything else crass. Thanks.

You are not the only one that has noticed. Years ago they put fragrance in the paper products and they smelled wonderful. That is unheard of today, I'm assuming because of health and ecological issues related to the fragrances. It was nice while it lasted, but paper smells like paper and/or the machinery that produces it. Either way, it stinks....
