Question:my 2 year old daughter decided to draw on my leather sofa luckaly its not loads but was wondeing if any one as any tips on removing it with out ruining the leather? thanks
Answers:
This really depends on what type of leather it is.
If it is on a pigmented leather then the first thing you should try is an ink stick. The fresher the ink the more chance you have of removing it. It is a good idea to have one in your house if you have a pale leather and children!!
You should also be using a good quality leather protector on your suite. This will act like a 'scotchgard' and will make any more mishaps easier to clean off.
If an ink stick doesn't work a solvent based remover will need to be used and it may also remove finish and pigment so is best left to the experts.
Hairspray occassionally works but can also make the matter far worse as it can spread the ink over a bigger area (especially on an aniline style leather)
Nail varnish remover or any other solvents will remove the finish and pigment which will need replacing.
DO NOT USE Baby wipes as they are about the worst thing you can use on a leather as they break down the finish and will eventually ruin it.
Please do not try milk it is a silly idea that this will work and will leave sticky residues on the surface which will help to break down the finish
If the ink is on an aniline style, there is nothing that will remove it because the ink will have re-dyed the leather. It may dissipate over time with cleaning and protecting.
Old ink will be harder to remove than new ink and may mean resorting to solvents which will also remove the finish. This is probably best left to the experts.
Silicones are the worst thing to use on leather as they will form a coating on the surface of the leather which will not allow any moisture to get to the leather and will eventually break all the finish down and make it crack. Leather needs water and should not be protected against it.
Leather does not need conditioning it needs cleaning and protecting on a regular basis with water based products this will keep it rehydrated and supple. Oils will make things much worse.

leather wipes. go to wilkinsons, they're a couple of quid for the pack... bargain!
or try normal wet wipes.
Use baby wipes. works every time
Boot polish or saddle soap , leather is leather regardless of what it is made into .
Get leather Ink remover from Land of leather or Tesco. Apply to the leather let it soak for about a minute this do the trick if not repeat the process.
WD40 or nail polish remover, try it somewhere it doesnt show first.
Try using a leather cleaner and if by chance the colour is faded use a liquid black shoe cleaner and that should bring it back but test a small part first to make sure the colour matches.
Is she the twin of mine who did the same?
Hair spray did the trick for me!
the best solution is vinegar it will clean all things off with no damage
Those are all wonderful suggestions, some of which I would not have had the guts to try, as I work extensively with leather. I would be interested in which ones work for you, because I would have said that it couldn't be cleaned without reapplying dye afterwards. If, however, any of the solutions offered do remove color from the leather, you can replace it with dye products from Tandy leather company. Use a liquid dye. It dries quickly, is permanent, and will not come off on anyone's clothing. Rub it briskly with a soft cloth after it dries to get the surface residue off. Do not use shoe polish either liquid or paste if this is in any area where people may sit. Polish WILL come off on clothing.
Ballpoint ink marks
Saturate the spots with hair spray. Allow to dry. Brush lightly with a solution of water and vinegar
Methylated spirits removes INK & GRASS stains , use a rag or cloth to wipe, then wash with a little of your own washing up liquid, the rinse with warm water
Hairspray but don't let it dry in or it will mark it. Use a clean non coloured cloth.
Spray it and then wipe straight away.
Try it somewhere not seen first so your sure it won't mark.
Try using some baby wipes. They do everything.(Ones without lotion)
