How do I Remove Old Wallpaper?

Question:

Answers:
The hardware stores sell a wallpaper scoring tool... it's round and you *scrub* it over the wall. This lets your solution penetrate behind the paper and into the glue.

The best way I have found to remove old wallpaper is to use a spray bottle filled with vinegar. Spray it on the wall and let it sit for a minute or two, once it has soaked intake a scraper and scrape it off.

I know it smells but we had a house with wallpaper at least 50 years old on horsehair plaster. We tried everything and vinegar was the only thing I found that worked without spending a fortune.

Good luck!

Home Depot has a kit for removing wall paper. It is time consuming but does a great job. They make a spray that loosens up the glue and then you are able to scrape or peel it off. It is non toxic and does not have an odor as some products do.
There are many ways to do this. I found that the easiest way is to get a spray bottle and fill it with hot water and a few drops of dawn.spray the wallpaper ...peel it .if the white back is still on the wall...spray it again (it should turn a shade darker when wet) then peel it. It is really the fastest and cheapest. and you don't have to score the paper at all or rent a steamer Good luck.

Oh yeah, I also use a Putty knife to scrape the paper off gently
You could rent a steamer and steam the wallpaper off. I have done this and it works..Good Luck
rent a steamer, apply hot steaming towels, until it loosens and begins to peel off. Sandpaper, and apply sizing coat before painting, or papering.
Whatever you do make sure you have plenty of time to do this and a lot of helping hands. It could get real ugly if there are layers of wallpaper on top of each others. Whatever kits you may get are slight relief to the torture of this task.
water n vinegar or thisproduct called dif get the tool required to perpetrate paper then spray bottle of the mixture ond let set and peel off with scraper if your painting afterwards youll need to get the glue off also
Use some fabric softener in a spray bottle w/ some water. spray it & it will peel right off..
I have use this in my whole house ... it works great & smells good too!
DO NOT USE A STEAMER. It will remove the wallpaper, but will also soften the drywall mud at your wall joints. When you scrape over those areas you will gouge the mud. The wallpaper will come off, but you will have a heck of a wall repair job ahead of you. SOURCE: Been there, done that.

DO NOT USE A SCORER. It will score not only the wallpaper, but the paper covering on the drywall. When the stripper is applied, it will take the paper off the wallboard. Since the surface the wallpaper adheres to is gone, so will the wallpaper. But again, you will have a heck of a wall repair job ahead of you. SOURCE: Many jobs repairing the walls of people who used "The Paper Tiger".

There is a very simple way to do it. At your home improvement store there is a product called DIF wallpaper stripper. They make a pre-mixed spray, and a dilutable liquid. Use the liquid. The spray will actually stain your walls.

Back at the house, peel the top layer of the wallpaper away. The waterproof surface will peel away from the paper backing pretty easily. Get as much of this off as you can. The "Paper Tiger" came about because strippers couldn't penetrate this surface. Little did they know the damage they wrought. Anyway, I've peeled wallpaper off that had been hung roughly around 1930, and I didn't have a problem getting it separated from the backing.

Then, mix the DIF with water as hot as you can stand it. Mix small quantities at a time so it stays hot. Use a sponge to wet, not dampen, an area - suggest no bigger than 2x2. Then use any scraper. I usually use a 3" wide putty knife. It doesn't have to be a razor (unless they put the wallpaper up w/ Super Glue).

This method will remove the paper, and do a good job on the paste as well.
Old one here that has removed many wall paper messes. Take a bath towel and get it wet in the kitchen sink with hot water, go over to a corner of the paper and hold the rung out towel up there, wait a minute or two and see if the corner has come loose, then slowly start peeling down on the paper, make sure you go slow and get the backing not just the front. As it starts to peel down you can add some water from a spray or you can redo your towel and put it back on.
Works great. good luck--cheap and easy solution. ;0)
I tried vinegar. I tried a steamer. Neither worked very well and left a huge mess. Then I tried DIF along with a wallpaper scorer. Still a mess, but without all the wet. First score the wallpaper with the little hand held scorer, apply the DIF and the paper just peels off! DIF has little or no fumes, but should be used with good ventilation, and it removed my 25 year old wallpaper with amazing results!
I'd go to home depo and get a wallpaper scoring tool. I found out about wallpaper when cleaning my mom's house. I found the tool and asked my brother what it was.
