Try liquid Oxi-Clean and your regular detergent. Let them soak for a couple of hours in warm water. I get mud in my water every once in a while,from our well water, and it will take mud out of my whites. It will not hurt coloured sheets. I use it with every white load I do.
Depending on how big your stains are, try rubbing lemons on the spot and leave the sheets in the direct sun for several hours. I have done this with yellowed canvas tennis shoes and it returned them to white.
