Is it more economical to tumble dry clothes and save on ironing or hang out to dry and iron all of it?

I've got a pre paid electricty meter and tested how much a dryer cost once. For an 80 min cycle (I had a large load) it cost 20p, but that was also to have washer running alongside, tele, fridge freezer etc. So not mega expensive until you consider how many times a week you would use it and of course that much of the contents still needs ironing! Line dried will always be more economical and I use the line when I can but with two toddlers and a mounting of washing the dryer comes in handy. It beats having wet clothes hanging round the house for days on end that start to get that stale urine type smell if they don't dry quick enough. I also can't stand rock hard towels you get off the line. Tumble dried towels are far softer.
Tumble dryers are expensive to run.
Definitely more economical to hang out to dry and iron it. Even modern tumble dryers take a lot of energy to run as compared with an iron.
Hanging out on the line reduces the need to iron anyway as the wind blows creases out. My washing always goes outside and i need to iron very little..
My guess is that using the tumble dry setting would be more economical because you are taking care of many garments at one time if it is electric. When you are ironing, your iron is a high draw appliance and would be drawing more electricity being used to iron deep set wrinkles depending upon the garment not to mention you have to do each one individually. I would suggest going out to your electric meter when you are using your tumble dry setting on your dryer and look at how fast you meter is turning and also doing the same when your iron is plugged in. If you really wanted to be analytical you could acutally write down the current reading prior to turning either appliance on and then again when you are finshed. If your dryer is gas, then you would have to compare the usage of gas and the electricity.
Hang and iron. Iron uses far less electricity (costs less than
propane, gas, etc.) and uses utility energy for much less time
unless you're a really finiky finiky finiky ironer :).
You cant beat the lovely smell of washing dried outdoors
Apart from that i would imagine it would be cheaper to use the iron than the tumble drier
I am not sure if this is the most economical - I put my clothes in the dryer for a few minutes to blow the wrinkles out & them I hang to dry the rest of the way. There are some clothes that I don't put in the dryer at all - towels, underwear, socks - but shirts, pants, skirts - I dry for a little while then hang. I usually do not have to iron at all.
Don't know about the economy of the excercise but I can't hang my clothes outside as there is no line and I'm not allowed to have one, so all are constantly dried off in a tumble drier. They don't look or feel the same. I'm thinking of asking a lady I know if I can just let my washing hang on her line for an hour to get that beautiful clean feeling back into them....
Hang out to dry, then run them through the dryer for about 5-10 minutes to get out the wrinkles. :)
cheaper to iron as tumble dryers use a lot more electricity than irons.
